I love ducks, soy sauce and the band Rush. I get extremely excited when I see trains, airplanes, and the monorail at Disney World.

I am a disciple of Carl Sagan and Brian May. I am 8635th in line for the throne of Amber, and I am eternally on the Quest of the Avatar.

I'm a geeky single dad, an aspiring astrophysicist, an occasional author, a bleeding-heart liberal, and an amateur guitarist. I am an atheist and a humanist who believes that Dale McGowan is correct, and that "atheism is just the first step. Humanism is the next thousand steps." To say "there is no God" is to merely make a statement; skepticism provides no instructions on how to live one's life. It is only the start of the journey, the beginning of the question: "Where do we go from here?"

For me, that answer is not merely atheism: it is atheism PLUS:

-humanism
-feminism
-social justice
-reproductive freedom
-environmentalism
-etc.

I believe that embracing these causes is what is required if skepticism and atheism, as ideas, are to have any positive impact on the world.

Sitting around and swatting at the bogeymen of pseudoscience, or only fighting at the obvious "church/state separation" battlefronts does not do enough to improve our lives, our communities, our world. Yes, these are fights that we must have, but we must also recognize our duty to work to make the world in which we have this fight a better one. We must make a world where all can participate, a world of inclusiveness and tolerance, one worth having these discussions in. Equality and Justice are meaningless words until they are available to everyone equally.

It is my opinion that fighting these battles is the way that atheists and skeptics can move from impotent (and ultimately irrelevant) philosophers to shapers of the future. That is how we make the world a better place, and that is where I plant my flag.

I've learned that this song sums up a lifetime of wisdom:

We can discuss. We can disagree. We can debate. But sometimes, there are people who are just mean, petty, angry and hateful. "Don't even pause to ask them why." "Thank your stars you're not that way, turn your back and walk away." Don't let them drag you down with them. Move on. Take a deep breath. You don't have to jump to action every time "someone is wrong on the internet." And do not let them make you feel guilty for choosing to no longer associate yourself with their negative influence.

"The grudges you've held for so long. It's not worth singing that same, sad song." Sometimes "all that you can do is wish them well."

Whatever you do, however, be sure to tend your garden, and to grow good things there:

I don't really post much on here anymore. Everything is Facebook and Twitter these days. My Twitter feed does post into here automatically, though. Mostly I just participate in various communities.
